How to Measure Your IPD for a VR Headset

If your VR headset looks slightly blurry, gives you eye strain, or makes you a little queasy after a while, there's a good chance one setting is off: your IPD. It's the distance between your pupils, and matching it to your headset is what makes the image snap into focus. Here's what it is, how to measure it, and where to set it on the headset you own.

What IPD is (and why it's the same thing as PD)

IPD stands for interpupillary distance — the distance in millimeters between the centers of your two pupils. If you've ever ordered glasses online, you've met this number under a different name: PD, or pupillary distance. Same measurement, two audiences. Opticians call it PD; VR makers call it IPD.

In a headset, each lens has a sweet spot — the point where the image is sharpest. Those two sweet spots are spaced a certain distance apart, and for the image to look crisp, that spacing needs to line up with the spacing of your eyes. Meta puts it directly: lens spacing should match your IPD as closely as possible for the best clarity. When they're mismatched, your eyes strain to fuse the two images, and that effort is what shows up as blur, fatigue, or motion discomfort.

The average, and why yours matters

Most adults land somewhere around 63mm, with the typical range running from about 56 to 70mm — which is roughly what mainstream headsets are built to cover. But "most" isn't "all." If your IPD sits toward the edges or beyond, the difference between a good guess and your real number is the difference between a sharp headset and a headache. That's exactly when measuring properly pays off.

Measuring your IPD

The classic method is a mirror and a millimeter ruler: hold the ruler against your brow, close one eye, line the zero on one pupil, then switch eyes and read the number under the other pupil. It works, but it's fiddly and easy to be off by a couple millimeters.

A camera-based tool is steadier. For VR, the number you want is the standard (far) IPD, which is what every headset's setting expects. Take a couple of readings and confirm they agree; when they do, you can trust the value.

Where you set your IPD — and whether your headset can even fit it — depends on the model. The ranges below come from the manufacturers:

Meta Quest 3 — a continuous dial from 53 to 75mm, adjustable with a wheel on the underside. Turn it while wearing the headset and the current value shows on screen, so you can dial straight to your measured number.

Meta Quest 3S and Quest 2 — three fixed presets rather than a smooth range: 58mm, 63mm, and 68mm. You pick the preset closest to your IPD by physically sliding the lenses. If your number falls between presets, choose the nearest one.

Apple Vision Pro — adjusts automatically. It measures your eyes and moves the displays to match, supporting an IPD range of 51 to 75mm. There's no manual dial; the headset handles it during setup and eye calibration.

If your measured IPD falls outside a headset's range, that's genuinely useful to know before buying — a model with a continuous dial (like the Quest 3) accommodates far more people than one limited to a few presets.

A quick reality check

Home measurement — camera or ruler — is a solid estimate, not a clinical reading, and for VR that's usually all you need; even being within a millimeter or two lands you in comfortable territory. If you're on a headset with a smooth dial, trust your eyes for the final tweak: set it near your measured number, then nudge slightly until text looks sharpest and most comfortable. Your measurement gets you to the right neighborhood; your own vision finds the exact door.
