What Happens If Your PD Is Wrong?
If you measured your own pupillary distance to order glasses online, there's a fair chance you've wondered what happens if you got it slightly wrong. The honest answer is: it depends — mostly on how strong your prescription is. A small error that's completely harmless for one person can be genuinely uncomfortable for another.
Why PD matters at all
Every lens is ground with an optical center — the exact spot that delivers the full, undistorted power of your prescription. PD tells the lab where to put that center so it sits in front of your pupil. When it's off, you end up looking through a part of the lens that isn't the true center, and that part behaves like a weak prism, bending light in a direction it shouldn't. Your eye muscles then work to pull your eyes back into alignment, and that quiet, constant effort is what you feel later as strain.
The most common symptoms of a wrong PD are eye strain, headaches, and a vague sense of distortion or that "something's off" — often after twenty minutes or so of wear, not immediately. Notably, these show up even when the prescription itself is perfectly correct, which is why PD problems are easy to misdiagnose as "just getting used to new glasses."
The part most people miss: it scales with prescription strength
Here's the key idea. The discomfort from a PD error isn't fixed — it's the error multiplied by the power of your lens. The American Academy of Ophthalmology puts it plainly: the degree of symptoms depends on both the strength of the prescription and the size of the error, and progressive lenses in a high plus or minus prescription can be problematic even when the PD is off by a small amount.
In practice, that means:
- Low prescriptions (roughly under ±3.00 diopters): a 1–2mm error is usually within comfortable tolerance. This is why plenty of people have worn glasses for years without ever knowing their exact PD.
- Stronger prescriptions and progressives: the same 1–2mm error induces noticeably more prism, and can produce real strain or distortion. The stronger the lens, the tighter you want your PD.
So "does PD have to be exact?" doesn't have one answer. For a light single-vision pair, a millimeter or two won't ruin anything. For a strong or progressive pair, precision earns its keep.
What to do if you suspect yours is wrong
If new glasses feel uncomfortable and your prescription hasn't changed, PD is a reasonable suspect. A sensible path: re-measure carefully — a few times, for consistency — and compare against the number used to make the glasses. If your prescription is on the stronger side, it's worth getting the PD confirmed by an eye care professional rather than relying on a single home reading.
